Why Watering Matters More Than You Think
You can mow sharp and fertilize right, but if your watering game is off, your lawn’s going to struggle. Too little? It dries out and goes dormant. Too much? You drown the roots and invite mold, fungus, and shallow growth.
Let’s dial in the right watering habits — Alberta-style.
How Much Water Does Your Lawn Need?
In general, your lawn needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall.
That might not sound like much, but the key is how you deliver it.
Water deeply, not frequently. Deep watering encourages strong, deep roots that handle heat and drought better.
Shallow, daily watering? That creates weak roots and spoiled grass that dries up at the first sign of sun.
Best Time to Water? Early Morning.
The absolute best time to water is between 4 AM and 10 AM. Here’s why:
The air is cool, so less water evaporates
Grass dries off during the day, reducing disease risk
Water has time to soak deep before the heat hits
Avoid watering in the evening. Wet grass overnight creates a perfect environment for fungus and disease.
How Long Should You Water?
This depends on your sprinkler system, but aim for 30–45 minutes per zone, 1–2 times a week. If you’re not sure how much water your system delivers:
Place a tuna can or small container on your lawn while watering
When it fills to 1 inch, you’re done
Adjust time as needed to hit that target
Signs You’re Overwatering
Mushy, soggy ground
Yellow patches
Weeds and mushrooms popping up
Grass feels spongy or soft
Signs You’re Underwatering
Grass turns bluish grey
It doesn’t spring back when you walk on it
Brown, dry patches start to spread
Soil is cracked or dusty
Smart Watering = Healthier Lawn
If your grass looks tired or patchy, check your watering routine before anything else. Deep, consistent watering builds tougher turf and saves water in the long run — no more constant catch-up.
