How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn?

Mowing Might Seem Simple… But Timing Is Everything

Mowing your lawn isn’t just about making it look neat — it’s one of the most important things you can do to keep it healthy. But how often should you mow? Once a week? Every few days? Can you skip a week and just cut it shorter?

Let’s break it down, Alberta-style.

The 1/3 Rule Still Rules

Before you think about frequency, know this:

Never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade in one mow.

Why it matters: Cutting off too much at once stresses the grass and weakens the roots. You’re better off mowing more often and less aggressively.

So… How Often Should You Mow?

Spring & Early Summer (May–June): Every 5–7 days

  • Grass is growing fast — especially if you fertilized or we’ve had a wet spring.

  • Stick to your routine and keep those blades sharp.

Mid–Late Summer (July–August): Every 7–10 days

  • Growth slows as heat rises, and rain disappears.

  • Mow less frequently to avoid stressing the grass.

Fall (September–October): Every 7 days until growth stops

  • Keep it tidy, but don’t mow super short before winter.

  • Final mow should be 2 to 2.5 inches — short enough to prevent mold, long enough to protect roots.

Tips From the Field

  • If it looks uneven, don’t wait for “mow day” — touch it up.

  • Mulching your clippings (instead of bagging) feeds the lawn naturally.

  • Keep your mower blade sharp and the deck clean — it makes every pass smoother and faster.

Signs You're Mowing Too Little

  • The lawn feels spongy or uneven

  • Grass is yellow or has brown tips

  • You’re emptying the bag more than usual

  • You’re cutting more than 1/3 of the blade each time

Mowing isn't just about appearances — it’s your lawn’s workout routine. Regular cuts help it grow thicker, stronger, and more resistant to weeds and drought. It’s the foundation of healthy lawn care.
